• The GentleMax Pro Laser System works by delivering pulses of energy into the skin. The laser energy targets the melanin in the hair bulge, thereby heating the hair follicle enough to prevent future growth.

• The GentleMax Pro features a cryogen cooling system that protects your skin, increases comfort and safety, all while still allowing high levels of laser energy to be delivered for effective treatments on all skin types.

• We’re often asked why multiple sessions are needed for hair removal. The roughly five million hairs on the human body all act independently of each other, and each individual hair can be in growing, transitioning, or resting phases. The laser can only reach follicles during the growth phase while the hair is actively anchored (as opposed to transition and resting phases when the hairs are not actively anchored in the follicles for the laser energy to be delivered).

• Multiple treatments are necessary to account for the variety of unwanted hair that’s in the growth phase as it continues to cycle.

• Many patients achieve a desired level of permanent hair removal in 6-8 treatments, typically spaced 4-6 weeks apart. This achieves from 85-90 percent hair reduction.

• Partially damaged follicles can return to growing hair, some fine vellus hairs can convert to dark hair, hormones can contribute to new growth. In those cases, yearly touchups / maintenance visits may be necessary.

• Success rate and total treatments required can vary from person to person based on hair color and type, body area, skin tone, pre and post-care cooperation, health history + medications, as well as hormonal factors.

• Laser Hair Removal has been around for decades even before the FDA approved the procedure in 1995. Lasers have been proven to be effective and safe for removing hair, especially with new and improved technology for darker skin tones.

• Redness and swelling are the most common side effects after having laser hair removal, and this usually subsides within a few hours.

These all need to be determined prior to any treatments and can be discussed during the consultation process:

• Pregnancy

• Any treatment site infection

• Tanning: avoid sun exposure for at least 2-4 weeks before the treatment (dependent on the skin type).

• Medications that cause photosensitivity must be reviewed during the consultation.

• Accutane use requires a wait time of 6 months minimum prior to treatment.

• Treatment is not recommended for patients who suffer from any medical problems such as: skin disorders, heart problems, cancer, seizures, and any immune system disorders or have implanted medical devices. If any of these cases apply, clearance from the Primary Physician is required to preform any laser procedure.

• Herpes simplex virus 1 or 2 patients must begin prophylactic medication prior to treatment.

• Keloid scarring

1.) Stay out of the sun: we ask our patients to not tan or darken their skin for at least one month prior to their appointment - this helps the laser to be more effective while also increasing safety (with maximum contrast between skin color and hair color).

2.) No Plucking: you can still shave (as it does not affect the follicles), but please do not wax, pluck / tweeze, or thread any unwanted hair for 2-4 weeks prior to your treatments. This ensures that the hairs are actively anchored in the follicles for laser targeting.

3.) Shave: Ideally just before your visit you can shave the treatment area with a brand new razor, but the night before is acceptable (and we also have the ability to touch up any needed shaving in the start of your session).

After your session at OM Laser & Wellness, your skin will likely be red for a short period and you hair will still be there. Unlike waxing, you will not see instant results - your hairs will begin to shed over the coming days. Please allow the hairs to fall out naturally - it will appear like the hair is growing as it’s being pushed out and expelled.

Not all of the hair in the treatment area will shed. Remember, the laser is targeting hairs that are currently in the growth phase which is usually around 20% of the total hairs in any area. This contributes to why multiple treatments are necessary as well as why some hairs in the treatment area will continue to grow back normally.

• On a scale of 1-5, our patients generally end up in the middle range of 2 - 2.5. There is some discomfort, but it is generally bearable. The cryogen cooling delivered by our GentleMax Pro laser greatly increases comfort compared to other manufacturers.

• Thanks to our GentleMax Pro Laser it is safe to treat all skin types including darker skin because it offers two wavelengths: one being a 755 nm wavelength and the other being a 1064 nm wavelength. The 1064 nm wavelength, better known as the Nd:YAG wavelength, is selectively absorbed by the deeper levels of the dermis—bypassing the skin's surface and only targeting deeper melanin at the level of hair follicle. Since Nd:YAG essentially bypasses the epidermis, this wavelength is considered a safe option for dark skin.
